Grammar · Verbs

ています, doing right now

The て-form plus います covers an action in progress, and with some verbs an ongoing state.

The mistake to avoid

住んでいます is a state, not an action in progress. A handful of verbs work this way, and you learn them one at a time.

Examples

いま、たべています。
I'm eating right now.
とうきょうに すんでいます。
I live in Tokyo.
