Grammar · Verbs

たいです, I want to

Attach たい to the ます stem to say you want to do something. It then behaves like an い-adjective: たくないです for the negative.

The mistake to avoid

Only use it about yourself. Saying 田中さんは行きたいです claims to know another person's inner state, which Japanese avoids.

Examples

みずが のみたいです。
I want to drink water.
いきたくないです。
I don't want to go.
