を, the object marker
[Object] を [verb]
を marks the thing the verb acts on. It is written with its own character but pronounced exactly like お.
The mistake to avoid
を is only ever used as a particle. You will never see it inside a word.
Examples
ご飯を食べます。
ごはんを たべます。
I eat rice.
本を読みます。
ほんを よみます。
I read a book.
