Grammar · です and negatives

です, the polite to be

です is how you politely say is, am or are. It does not conjugate for person or number, so one form covers everything.

The mistake to avoid

です is pronounced closer to 'des'. The u is devoiced and almost disappears.

Examples

たなかさんです。
It's Mr Tanaka.
げんきです。
I'm well.
