でした, the past

[な-adjective] でした

Again like a noun: でした for the past, じゃなかったです for the past negative.

The mistake to avoid

This is why sorting adjectives into い and な early is worth the effort. The two groups conjugate in different directions.

便利でした。

べんりでした。

It was convenient.

暇じゃなかったです。

ひまじゃなかったです。

I wasn't free.
